In the KS there are 1,022 families still living in tents one year after
the tsunami. Night after night people were sleeping on wet ground. Winds
and rains blew the tents down and they would have to be reinstalled.
Loss of sleep was accompanied by loss of hope. Compassion Frisco responded
to the plea from Mr. Y to try to provide some kind of flooring for the
tents so that residents could sleep dry.
Compassion Frisco approached Catholic Relief Services about this massive
need. The director of CRS gladly accepted the challenge, made arrangements
for the wood and nails to be ordered and delivered. After a month of working
through complex procedures to guarantee that the wood was legal (not wood
from trees that were clear cut), the first trucks made the difficult journey
to KS over roads that had been severely eroded by the tsunami, and delivered
the wood for the flooring. Collaboration is the name of the game.
