The tsunami in Kampung Mulia, a community in its capital city of Banda
Aceh, left this building useless—without purpose. That is,
until Compassion Frisco and partners in Aceh Link leased it with a promise
to restore it. A school? A computer center? Just a
gathering place? But why not all the above?
Just this week its purpose was clearly defined. More than two
dozen women began training for work in a salon, cutting and shampooing
hair, or baking cakes to be sold in little stores or sewing needed items by
hand or treadle machines. These women and many others joining
them will now find ways to support their families.
Forty children and teenagers will gather several times weekly
to develop computer skillls and to speak English, maximizing opportunities
now and in the future. The graduation ceremonies of an adult English
class held here has added dignity to their accomplishment. Later
trauma counseling and other emerging areas of study will be added in
response to special needs of three communities.
A new playground immediately adjacent to the community center provides
fun for the little ones and a gathering place for parents.
If you have contributed to the work of Compassion Frisco,
you have had a part in this effort. Other needs now are demanding
our attention—the ongoing expenses of the community center’s
operation, the addition of a children’s library and additional computers. You
can have a part in meeting these immediate and urgent needs of the center
through your gifts to Compassion Frisco.
